                                            DELAWARE STATE SENATE 

141st GENERAL ASSEMBLY 

SENATE BILL NO.  186

AN ACT TO AMEND TITLE 29 OF THE DELAWARE CODE ESTABLISHING FREEDOM TRAIL HISTORICAL MONUMENTS. 

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE: 

Section 1.  Amend Chapter 5 Subchapter II of Title 29 by creating a new §560 to read   as follows:
 
“§560 Freedom Trail” 

Consistent with the authority granted to the Department of State pursuant to §551 and §552, the Department shall consider and recognize Delaware’s Underground Railroad and other historical sites associated with African American Freedom in Delaware and designate such sites with specially designated Freedom Trail Markers.  The Department shall consider Delaware’s underground railroad trail by utilizing the historical markers program to identify important historical sites as evidence of the struggle for freedom over slavery, segregation and other forms of injustice.

                                                       SYNOPSIS 

This Bill directs the Department of State, and its division of Historical and Cultural Affairs to recognize sites that evidence the Freedom Trail in Delaware.  The Freedom Trail is the underground railroad which helped slaves escape to freedom and other sites associated with African American Freedom in Delaware.
