Our Objective
(click photo to enlarge)
We
have accomplished a great deal in our efforts to realize
plans to erect a monument honoring the remarkable former
slave, abolitionist, worker on the Underground Railroad,
spy, nurse, humanitarian, Harriet Ross Tubman.
We have
decided on a spot along the Delaware River adjacent to
Lion’s Park where this symbol of heroic black struggle and
accomplishment will stand, pointing northward in close
proximity to other monuments to ethnic presence and
participation.
Close
to the juncture of the Canal and the
Delaware River, this placement is a relevant and cogent
reminder of the fact that many persons, hidden beneath cargo
on canal barges, escaped bondage in the south using this
waterway as a means to reach safety in the north.
To
erect a statue is no easy task, and considerable funds must
be raised to achieve our goal, a freestanding life sized
bronze figure pointing towards the guiding North Star.
This a
call for membership in the African American Historical and
Cultural Society of Bucks County, whose dedication is to
document the history and presence of blacks in this area, as
well as a request for specific donations to assist in
erecting this statue of Harriet Ross Tubman.
PRESERVE THE LEGACY OF AN AMERICAN HERO
The
African American Historical and Cultural Society of Bucks
County has accepted the help of The Bucks County Committee
For Interracial Harmony in forming an alliance for the
purpose of developing diverse personnel whose objectives
will be to stimulate awareness as well as raise funds for
the Tubman monument.
