NEW CASTLE COUNTY
PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Wilmington, Delaware was a famous station on the
Underground Railroad in the middle and late 1800’s; and
WHEREAS, AN
ABOLITIONIST NAMED Thomas Garrett, who lived his adult life in
Wilmington, helped runaway slaves escape to freedom and, in a
period of 35 years in the mid-1800’s, assisted an estimated
2,700 people flee slavery; and
WHEREAS, people who knew Thomas Garrett well described him as a
fearless, honest and resourceful who loved his fellow men; and
WHEREAS, The Harriet Tubman Historical Society, an advocate for
the preservation of the life and history of Harriet Tubman and
the Underground Railroad in Delaware, is honoring Thomas Garrett
by placing an historical marker at his homesite, which is now
Delaware Technical and Community College, and publishing a
special newspaper featuring Thomas Garrett and Delaware’s
Underground Railroad participants.
NOW,
THEREFORE, I, DENNIS E. GREENHOUSE, COUNTY EXECUTIVE OF NEW
CASTLE COUNTY, DELAWARE,
do hereby
proclaim today, August 20, 1993 as
THOMAS GARRETT
DAY
in new castle county and, further,
I urge the citizens of New Castle County to join me in saluting
Garrett for his commitment to helping people on their journey to
freedom and for his success as an active participant of the
Underground Railroad in Delaware.
